Certification-Ready Portable Lighting ODM: Inside AEC's Shanghai Partnership Model

Every sourcing manager knows the moment. The sample looks right, the price looks right, and then someone asks the question that decides the program: can you prove it holds up in our market? For distributors, MRO catalog owners, and workshop channel brands, that question — not the product photo — is where a lighting supply relationship lives or dies.

AEC Lighting Solutions Co., Ltd has been answering that question from Shanghai since 2000. Founded as an integrated R&D, design, manufacturing, testing, and global business operation company, AEC has built its position on what it calls supply-chain certainty: the ability to deliver complex portable lighting products with consistency, reliability, and international compliance. Today the company operates at the intersection of ODM/B2B capability, self-owned brands, accredited testing partnerships, and AI-native workflows — moving partners from isolated products to working systems.

What the Product Actually Does

The platform shown here is a slim-profile folding COB work light, and its design decisions are made for people working in tight, awkward, badly lit spaces.

Dual-joint rotating head. The light bar sits on a two-stage joint: a disc-style pivot at the base of the head and a secondary hinge above it. This lets the bar fold flat against the body for storage, stand upright as a torch, or angle sideways to throw light across a surface rather than into the user's eyes. The multi-position silhouette in AEC's own reference imagery shows the full sweep of angles the joint supports.

Linear COB array. The emitter face carries a visible row of LED chips behind a slim diffuser strip. A linear COB layout produces an even wash of light across a work area instead of a hot spot in the middle — the difference between seeing a wiring harness and guessing at it.

Slim folding bar. The head section is narrow enough to slide into a gap between components and to fold down into a compact profile for a tool bag, a technician's cart, or retail packaging with a small footprint.

Single-button control with a molded housing. One rubberized power button sits on the body front, sized for a thumb in a work glove. The body is a two-tone enclosure — black structural shell with a green overmold panel — carrying an integrated fold-out base that lets the unit stand on a flat surface or hook over an edge.

Charging at the base. A recessed charging port sits on the lower housing, positioned so the cable does not foul the light bar when the head is folded down. The unit carries model markings visible on the emitter face in the reference imagery.

Where It Earns Its Place

The application image tells the story better than a spec sheet: a technician leaning into a vehicle engine bay, holding the light close to the component he is actually working on. That is the intended use case — automotive service lighting, where the working envelope is small, the shadows are deep, and both hands are usually busy.

The same platform fits naturally into the other channels AEC serves:

Mechanics and workshop channels — folding slim body, hang-or-stand base, glove-friendly controls.
Professional work light lines — private-label and catalog-ready variants on a proven form factor.
Industrial and MRO lighting — inspection tasks, maintenance bays, utilities, and field service kits.
Emergency and public safety — a compact secondary light that folds out of the way until it is needed.

AEC builds across nine product platforms in total, including mechanics and workshop lighting, automotive service lighting, industrial/MRO lighting, emergency and public safety lighting, creator and imaging lighting, circadian and visual comfort lighting, smart disinfection hardware, and applied light hardware systems.

The Part Buyers Do Not See in the Sample Box

A folding work light looks simple. It is not. It is optics, driver electronics, thermal management, a battery pack with its own firmware, a mechanical joint rated for thousands of cycles, and a compliance file that has to survive customs and a retailer's audit.

AEC runs eight capability disciplines under one roof: optical engineering with simulation and goniophotometer validation; electronics and firmware including constant-current drivers, BLE/Wi-Fi, and battery fuel-gauging; mechanical and industrial design covering IK/IP rating and drop/vibration testing; custom Li-ion and LiFePO4 battery systems with BMS firmware and UN38.3 support; SMT plus assembly with AOI inspection and full lot traceability; in-house testing and validation with a photometric lab, EMC pre-scan, salt-spray, thermal shock, and drop testing; certification and compliance management; and global commercialization support — export documentation, warranty and service network planning, marketplace listing, and brand-friendly packaging.

On compliance, the framework is specific rather than aspirational. Quality systems run to ISO 9001 and EN/IEC 80079-34. Product compliance covers CE, UKCA, FCC, RoHS, and UL/CSA/MET. Explosion-proof systems carry IECEx, ATEX, CNEx, and PA. Testing partnerships with TÜV SÜD, Intertek, and CSA give partners a validation path they can point to in a tender document.

The design record backs the engineering story: iF Design Award 2020, Red Dot Winner 2025, IDEA Award, and Good Design Award. Behind the company sit more than 420 patents, 50-plus R&D engineers, 30-plus design awards, operations across 70-plus markets, and over 12 million users served.

Industry Insight: Why the Middle of the Market Is Disappearing

Portable lighting has a structural problem. At the low end, products converge on the same silhouette and the same bill of materials, and margin collapses into a price war that nobody wins. At the high end, large suppliers are stable but rigid — slow to take on a differentiated brief, slower to revise a line. In between sits a gap that most buyers have felt: suppliers who can execute a genuinely different product and still carry it through certification, tooling, and repeatable yield.

AEC addresses that gap with a gated development process — eight steps from project discovery through product fit review, product definition, design and engineering, prototype and validation, tooling and certification, pilot production, and mass production, with three formal gates along the way. Gate 1 validates the concept against opportunity scoring, BOM feasibility, optical and battery targets, and an IP scan. Gate 2 locks engineering with DFM sign-off, pilot tooling kickoff, and a fixed certification path. Gate 3 confirms launch readiness: pilot lot validated, certificates issued, packaging and logistics in place.

As AEC puts it: most ODM partners give you a moodboard and a quote; AEC gives you a system — gated, audited, and built for repeatable yield.

That system is now supported by an AI-native operating layer that AEC treats as management infrastructure rather than a software feature — clean data governance as the foundation, an opportunity-to-market workflow running insight through scoring, concept validation, and the gate structure, and a project control tower that makes execution visible through project cards, action and risk logs, and gate records. For a partner, the practical effect is fewer status-chasing emails and a clearer answer to the only question that matters at any given week: where exactly is my program?

Six Ways to Work With AEC

Partners engage across private label, ODM customization on AEC platforms, full product line development, OEM manufacturing to partner specifications, joint development with shared IP, and long-term strategic portfolio partnership.

AEC's five partner categories describe who tends to arrive: professional channel brands working through MRO and catalog distribution, mechanics and workshop channels, specialist distributors and regional importers, enterprise OEM/ODM accounts with audit-ready requirements, and applied light innovation brands in circadian, blue-free, wellness, and smart hardware.

The promise is deliberately plain. For global partners, a stable manufacturing and validation base. For brands and channels, product definition, design value, and market learning. For the next decade, the operating system that connects the two.

Start the Conversation

If you are building or renewing a portable lighting line for a channel, a catalog, or a workshop network, the fastest way to test fit is to send the brief — target market, price band, compliance requirements, and the application you need to win. AEC's team will tell you plainly whether the platform aligns and what the certification path looks like.
